Palmers' Outback Legend
by Deanna Wilkinson

a Printed Book   ISBN: O 9578008 19

Synopsis:

This book is a family saga that spans three generations and focuses on the characters of three men and their true life experiences.
It begins in the mid-nineteenth century when gold was first discovered in Victoria in 1854,  the year of the Eureka Stockade.
The story moves to Western Australia when alluvial gold was discovered in Kalgoorlie and throughout that region.  It tells stories about the gold prospectors, and the lives of the people in the mining towns of that era.  It tells the stories of the Royal stagecoach, when goats were used for milking and billy-goat races. The book tells how donkeys and camel teams brought in the wool from the sheep stations and carted precious water back on the return journey.  The book goes on to tell how the land was opened up in the pastoral station country and harsh conditions that people lived under while clearing the land with true pioneering spirit.
The times of the great depression were hard and men were forced back to underground mining for gold.  Eventually a desire to settle on land was achieved when they were able to buy a land holding in the fertile south west of Western Australia.  A dairy was established and later this was converted into a mixed farming operation before their eventual retirement.

About the Author:

Deanna spent her early childhood on a mixed farming property south west of Perth in Western Australia with  two brothers and a younger sister. She completed a commercial course at a  business college and then worked for a traveling accountancy firm, a timber hardware business and a motor sales business.  She met and married her husband who is a farmer.  During her married life she has held a number of committee positions and she does voluntary work within the community. Deanna has kept very busy as a wife and mother and helping her husband with many of the farming duties.
Throughout her early childhood Deanna’s father loved to share many interesting and entertaining tales of his life in the Australian outback.  After her mother passed away it became apparent how important it was that she record her father’s memories.  She felt that the stories he told were a significant part of Australia’s pioneering history and it would be a shame if all were lost.
Writing her fathers biography was the biggest challenge of her life as it has taken her nine long years of research before the story of “Palmers’ Outback Legend” was finally published.
