A
Look Over The Edge
by
Jeanie Crago
a
Printed Book ISBN:
085905294X.

Synopsis:
A
Look Over the Edge is like a detour off the well-worn road into the outback
of Western Australia.
Follow
the story of five children, sense the courage of Tom, catch the spirit
of adventure of life on the road and fence line, where the windmill was
home base and the horizon the boundary. Feel the dust in your teeth, mustering
goats. Glimpse the glitter of gold at Dead Finish. You will be pulled over
"the edge" into the wonder of this country - into a story uniquely Australian.
Foreword:
What
does a city slicker from Canada know about growing up in the
outback
of Western Australia?
Not
much. There are no Kimberley shorthorn bulls or bungarras in
my
hometown of Vancouver. Smokos and billy teas are as foreign to
me
as Venus and Mars. Yet, having read Jeanie Crago’s, A Look Over
The
Edge, I somehow feel I have a better understanding of the
challenges
of working and living in the bush.
This
is a very personal journal of growing up in rural Western
Australia
in the 1960’s and 70’s. From Mullewa to Meekatharra,
Millstream
to Mt Newman and well beyond, this is a crisscross trip
around
outback W.A. It’s a story of caravanning, but not for pleasure.
This
is caravanning as a way of life, moving for work, for necessity. I
think
if you know the places Jeanie writes about it helps with the charm
of
the narrative, but even if you don’t it pulls you in, wondering where
will
they end up next. Whether it is fossicking for gold in the Pilbara
or
milking cows in Mt. Barker you get a sense of being there.
There
is adventure, there is heartache, there is humour and there is
sadness,
but most of all there is a sense of surviving and even thriving
in
often rustic and restrictive circumstances. I suppose it’s the story of
life,
a different life from most, but the common thread of getting by, is
there
for us all. Jeanie likes the words “Aim for the stars and hope to
clear
the fence.” I like the words of a Guy Clark song “Spread your
arms,
hold your breath and always trust your cape”.

Review
As
a songwriter I have for many years now kept a songwriting diary - a loose
record of thoughts and ideas to hopefully fill tyhe gaps between the inspired
and no so inspired times. Reading "A Look Over the Edge" by Jeanie Crago,
has inspired me to another resolution - to extend my diary to include the
day to day - to faithfully record the seemingly little things in life -
as Jeanie shows us so beautifully in her writing - it's in these little
things that life is truly led.
We
often fail to recognize the history, humour or pathos in events as they
happen and not until some distance has been gained do we see the beauty,
complexity and sadness in life.
Thankyou
Jeanie for recording your time and place - thank you for the events, characters
and images that were yours and now have become ours through your experience
and work. Taking the journey with you has been wonderful.
P.S.
Is that just the wind I hear or could it be Tom whispering "You've Done
Us Proud"?

the Author:
Frank
& Jeanie Crago with Family
Jeanie
Crago (nee Barrett) was born in 1960, the second daughter to June and
Les Barrett, in a family of five children. With an upbringing spread over
the whole state of Western Australia - Jeanie could be called anything,
but not ordinary. Her desire to write was kindled at the age of eleven
when she read Patsy Adam Smith's book "Hear the Train Blow", a story which
echoed in many ways, the life of her own family. Jeanie worked for several
years as secretary/bookkeeper in businesses such as funeral directors,
a hospital pharmacy and an aircraft maintenance business - hardly ordinary!
Jeanie has a great sense of "I can do anything". Her Dad is a strong personality
who tackled the impossible with the saying "Aim for the stars and hope
to clear the fence." Jeanie says just clearing the fence is not accepting
second best - it's getting in and giving it a go, no matter what the odds
- it's a major achievement.
Brought
up with a strong faith in God, Jeanie knows that if she can't, God can.
Jeanie lives with her husband Frank and four lovely children on a picturesque
farm in the midwest of Western Australia, where they grow wheat, lupins
& barley, cut hay, run sheep and cattle and generally turn a hand to
anything that comes along. |
About
the Illustrator
Brett
Connelly was born in a good year - 1960 - like me. He was
brought
up on the family farm. He left school in Dec 1975 to do a
butchering
apprenticeship in Corrigin. Gaining his trade he returned
to
work on the farm, shearing during the off season. Shearing became
impossible
in 1990 as he had been diagnosed with a severe form of
arthritis.
Now he had to consider his future seriously. Drawing had
been
a lifelong passion - at school, at home, during cut out times, any
time.
Totally self taught, preferring cartoon and caricature drawing as
it
suited his quick wit and imagination.
With
the introduction of Computer Signage he saw a way to utilise
his
skills. In 1996 Brett began a part-time computer-cut sign and cartoon business
from home, while still doing what farm duties he could manage.
Brett
is a colourful character with many interests and hobbies.
Training
for 10 years at kung fu. A motorbike enthusiast all his life
having
owned 19 various motorbikes up until 1997 when the arthritis
became
so severe he couldn’t ride his Harley sidecar outfit.
Another
of Brett’s loves, apart from his partner Cathy, is car racing.
During
summer he enjoys the drags. Winter finds him at speed-way as
commentator.
Brett
has never smoked or drank and says his only bad habit is
doing
things his way, classing himself as an individual. Doing an
excellent
job of it too with his business in Corrigin -
Connelly’s
Images.
