If you have any advice or tips that you feel
may be of value to authors, please email them to the: webmaster@midi-ebooks.com.
Your contributions are very welcome.
Page Borders and Backgrounds
You can make your MIDI-eBook pages look more
attractive and interesting if you use a highlighted border and or background.
You can make your own, or you can find lots of
them on the Web.
Use search terms such as "free page borders"
or "free page backgrounds"
Finding just the right "theme" can be very time
consuming.
That's why I prefer to make my own.
If you can use a graphics program such as Paint
Shop Pro then it's easy.
Stationary
Another handy source of borders and backgrounds
is "stationary" as used in Outlook Express. In many cases you get a bonus
MIDI file as well. So just search the Web with the words "email stationary".
Unfortunately a lot of these are also copyrighted.
If you use Outlook Express, you will find a few
examples of stationary in the following directory:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Stationary
There are many examples of stationary that contain
animated gifs that scroll in different directions. I doubt that these are
suitable for use in eBooks, however one could use Paint Shop Pro to "capture"
such a background and with suitable cropping it could become a "still"
backgound/border. This would also save a lot of processor capacity.
Children's Books
MIDI-eBooks are ideal for children's stories. You can find MIDI files
of childrens nursery rhymes, theme tunes etc. You could even introduce
a Karaoke style sing-along by displaying the words to the songs. Come to
think of it, that might be just as popular with the adults!
Classical Short Stories
If you don't have a flair for writing, you may try puting music to
an existing short story that is in the public domain. ie. one that is no
longer copyrighted. It won't be all your own work, however the result
could be most enjoyable for the reader and it would be guaranteed fun for
the author!
Christmas Stories
What better way would there be to celebrate Christmas! Write a Christmas
story and you've got a wonderful ready made palette of well known tunes
to choose from.
Ethnic Stories
Every land and culture has heaps of wonderful tunes that will lend
pride, passion and joy to any ethnic orientated story that you write.
CD Distribution
If you are going to write a very large book with many illustrations
supported by video as well as music, slides and animations, then you may
have to consider distribution of your book on CD. At present anything
larger than 20 MB will be impractical for general distribution on the Internet.
This may change over the next few years as transfer bandwidth increases.
