Tips For Success
Choose a Popular Subject
If possible, write about something you know or
enjoy.
Readership will always be greater if you choose
human interest stories.
Writing a story about life gives us an infinite
canvas on which to paint our story.
Black text on white paper. Music allows
us to paint our story in technicolor!
The colour of emotions is enhanced by the addition
of music!
Music almost always involves our emotions.
Choose Popular Music
Readers will instantly recognise popular music
and in most cases they will even know some of the lyrics. This will add
to there enjoyment. Who doesn't recognise a tune made popular by Frank
Sinatra, Elvis, Abba or The Beetles?
Ethnic music can be used to great effect when
the story involves distinct connections to geographical locations or cultures.
Special interest groups may prefer classical music. You begin to
see the potential here?
Arouse Appropriate Emotions
Choose music that best reflects the emotion your
story depicts in that page of text.
Invariably the key lies in the lyrics. If you
can find a song that describes the situation in your story, you can be
sure the music will be perfect.
In some cases you can use music that is purely
instrumental and has no lyrics.
An example would be Marches. Choose one that
is appropriate for the nationality of the characters. This will arouse
the emotions of pride. Readers will identify with the character and
imagine themselves marching off to protect their homeland from the enemy.
Don't make the mistake of choosing a march that belongs to the enemy!
If in doubt as to the origins of the music, do
more research or leave it out!
Use Appropriate Graphics
Pictures will add to your readers enjoyment by
giving them a distraction as they are listening to the music. After they
have read the text their eyes will return to the picture
and their thoughts will be carried away by the
music.
Try to find pictures that reflect the emotion
or the scene in your story.
For example the mixture of emotions when saying
farewell to loved ones at an airport.
A picture of a jet on takeoff would be appropriate
because many of us have experienced this situation. We identify with the
characters. We cry just as we did the last time we saw our loved ones leave.
The use of pictures and music adds vitality to
our palette of words.
Make it Interactive
Readers love interactivity, so if your story suits that sort of application
you will be able to incorporate lots of ideas that make enjoyable interesting
reading.
