What is a MIDI ?

In general terms we refer to a MIDI file.
This is file that allows a computer to synthesize musical notes and generate music.
"MIDI" stands for "Musical Instrument Digital Interface", and is a standard digital "language" which allows musical instruments and related devices from any manufacturer to communicate with one another via a simple cable.

Musicians first connected computers and musical instruments.
In fact, it wasn't long before computers were being manufactured with built-in MIDI tone generators, paving the way for advanced desk-top music production, multimedia, and game software applications.

If you would like to know more about the technical aspects of MIDI then follow this link:   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIDI

MIDI music is all instrumental, there are no human voices.
Musicians use sequencers to compile MIDI music which is set of instructions that tells the computer which notes to play.
That is why MIDI files are quite small, they do not contain actual music.
MIDI music can sound very different when played on different computers.

Only in recent years has true HI FI MIDI music become available to the general public. Earlier computers played MIDI music, but the sound was very simple and was only good enough for children's games and was dismissed as a novelty.

Modern Computers
With the introduction of more powerful home computers with 64 bit sound cards, and advanced software, it is now possible to hear music that is often so realistic that it sounds as good as an original live performance, performed with real instruments.
The quality and realism of the music is a measure of the MIDI musician's talent.

Even so, an older computer can still spoil a MIDI performance and make the music sound like it is being played on a Kazoo. Not a pleasant experience at all.
Many people dismiss MIDI music because they have never heard it played on a state-of-the-art computer with a multi-media sound system.

Midi Music files are readily available from thousands of sites on the Internet and can be downloaded and played on your computer.

The Big Advantage of MIDI
MIDI files are much smaller than any other type of music file. Most MIDI files only use a few hundred kilobytes of computer memory. Many MP3 files use several Megabytes of memory which means their use for eBooks would be totally impractical for the time being at least.

Compose your own MIDI files
If you are a musician or only an amateur there are many wonderful programs available to help you compose your own MIDI music just using your computer or combined with professional musical instruments.
Here is the URL for such a program called "Band in a Box".
